Everything you always wanted to know about Chartering a Yacht but were afraid to ask...

We hear comments like these consistently from clients following their yacht charter... both long time clients and first time charterers. Though we never tire of hearing such wonderful comments, they don't surprise us!

With the busy summer season just around the corner, we thought it would be helpful for our readers to review the basics of arranging a yacht charter vacation.

What is a yacht charter? A yacht charter is the ultimate choice for a customized, private, luxury vacation. Like a floating villa taking you on a cruise to the destination of your choice. Whatever your preference -- motor yacht or sail, ranging in size from 40' to over 300' ... berthing along side world class yachts in the heart of the Côte d'Azur, or gunkholing the coast of Maine -- we can find the right yacht for you.

Should I search for a yacht to charter on the internet or through a Charter Broker? A Charter Broker is a professional charter yacht consultant -- like a personal shopper for yachts that are available for charter. Expert charter brokers work diligently to remain up to date on the location, equipment & amenities and the condition of yachts that are available for charter in addition to the experience of the crew, and local laws governing yachts. In order to expertly advise clients on the most suitable yacht for their party, a reputable charter broker will regularly attend charter shows worldwide in order to inspect yachts firsthand and personally meet their crews.

You will find thousands of yachts listed as available for charter on the internet. Yet, for various reasons they may not be available at a given time or location and the yacht may not be the most suitable or cost effective for your needs. In addition to regularly inspecting yachts, a professional charter broker belongs to trade associations and subscribes to various industry media in order to best serve their clients with the most up-to-date information. If you still prefer to do some research yourself and find yachts on the internet - your charter broker will be able to give you an unbiased, professional view of the yachts & their crew.

Do I pay a charter broker for his or her services? Charter brokers are paid a commission by the yacht's owner. There is no cost to you for the services of a professional charter broker.

Special needs or a special event? Perhaps a member of your party has dietary restrictions or physical limitations. A professional charter broker will be able to find a yacht with an experienced chef who can cater to dietary requirements, or a vessel with accommodations or access appropriate for a guest's needs. How much will it cost to charter a yacht? A professional charter broker will be able to assess for you the complete cost of yacht charter in advance of booking and present you with a selection of suitable yachts within your budget.

What else do I need to know? It is the charter broker's job to handle all the details so that you can enjoy a care free vacation. Charter brokers are experienced in charter contract terms and the jurisdictions of the myriad of locations and yacht flag states. Your broker will draft the appropriate charter agreement, to be signed by the yacht's owner, to protect you as client. Charter funds will be held in escrow in accordance with the charter agreement and the broker's fiduciary responsibility to you.

Where can I charter a yacht? Yachts are available for charter almost anywhere there is water: the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mediterranean, Adriatic, Northern Europe, US Eastern Seaboard & New England, Pacific Northwest, South Pacific -- are some of the most popular destinations for yacht charters. How will the yacht's crew know about our charter party? Once the charter contract is executed, the broker will issue a charter information and preference form for guests to complete. This will enable the captain and crew to plan menus, beverage & wine selection, activities for children in the party and a custom cruising itinerary... There is also space to let the crew know any special interests you have - snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, jet skis, shopping, nightlife, hiking, wildlife... as well as special celebrations.

Service: The service of a good charter broker does not end when you step on board your yacht and begin your charter. Your broker is available before, during and after the charter to answer any questions you have or should you need to make any changes to your charter ... and when you are ready to plan your next adventure!
