Captain Steve Ray


Steve is a United States citizen. After completing his college education in 1981, he began his career as a professional yachtsman, gaining his first command in 1985. He holds both American and British Captain's Licenses, and has logged in excess of 150,000 nautical miles.

With 20 years of experience on power and sailing vessels, both privately owned and available for charter, he has an extensive knowledge of traditional and modem sailing rigs and ships' systems. He has been employed by the current Owner of "SELJM"   since the purchase of the yacht in 1995, and he has so far completed six years out of the scheduled seven year circumnavigation. Steve combines an intelligent approach with a calm, professional attitude.

CHEF: JESSICA A. DEVEREAUX British-educated, Jessica spent the first part of her life in the Bahamas. She has been cooking professionally on yachts for over 10 years. Her professional training was done at a Cordon Bleu style cooking school in England, and she has recently supplemented her skills by completing courses in Thai and Malay cookery.

Cooking on "SELJM" during the last six years of the yacht's circumnavigation has given Jessica the opportunity to broaden her experience by acquiring first hand knowledge of the ingredients and recipes of other cultures around the world. She is also aware of the needs of modem and health conscious clients and combines creativity with nutrition.

STEVE AND JESSICA have been working together as a team for nearly eight years.

The remaining three crewmembers have been chosen not only for their unique experience but also for their personalities and dispositions.



MATE: M. ROBERT SLATER Australian born, Rob was originally hired as Engineer on "SELJM" for the America's Cup in Auckland, New Zealand. After that season, he left "SELJM" to complete his Australian (USL) Master Class 5, and rejoined the yacht as Mate in January of 2001. Rob is a six year professional, three years of which were spent on both charter and privately owned yachts in the Mediterranean. He has also worked on charter boats on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. He is a conscientious and diligent worker and possesses an excellent sense of humor.

ENGINEER: IAN D. WALKER is from the North Island of New Zealand and was first employed on "SELJM" as a casual laborer in Auckland, 1997. He has dedicated three years to the program, and due to his attitude, experiences, and skills, he was promoted to full-time engineer in June of 2000. Ian comes from a well-known sailing family and has been sailing in his native New Zealand from an early age. He is an excellent problem solver and his natural abilities and good nature make him an asset to the yacht.

STEWARDESS: JODIE R. PERKINS
Jodie was born and educated in the South Island of New Zealand. Since completing University in 1991, she has had various jobs in the Tourism and Boating industries. Jodie joined "SELJM" in April of 2000 and is considered by the Owner and his guests to be the best stewardess the yacht has ever employed. She combines her silver service skills with a cheerful, hardworking manner and a meticulous attention to detail.
